Lake Effect
Here is a fun poem I wrote about college. I went to college at Penn State-Erie, and the one winter I was there, Erie got something like 160 inches of snow (mostly due to the lake effect phenomenon). It was crazy, but often fun.
“Lake Effect”
by Nicole Johns
that winter the snow
developed over Lake Erie
squall after squall
exhausting itself in blinding
whiteness the world pillowed
feathery softness
we played like children
on a snow day free
from exams and presentations
free from obligations
our new adult lives
we spun doughnuts
in abandoned parking lots we drank
a cheap local beer
as we sledded down the ice-slicked boulevard
dressed in snowsuits warmed by
alcohol we dropped laughing
reveling in states of emergency
