Memoir Bashing

Yesterday, I came across a New York Times book review by Lorrie Moore, in which she proceeds to belittle and bash memoir as a genre (except for a select few that make her cut). It seems like there has been a lot of memoir bashing lately. Why all the hate? If you don’t like memoir, don’t read memoir. But don’t try to say that memoir is a lesser literary form and that fiction is king. Each genre is good in its own way, and I don’t think it is necessary or productive to say one genre is better than another genre. It’s so presumptuous.

Dinty W. Moore wrote a great response on the Brevity blog. Links to both the original book review and the response are below.
